Over the past few days the motorsport world has been saying goodbye to fatally injured former motorcycle world champion Marco Simoncelli, who will be buried on October 27, 2011. Fans are already making their way to the funeral site while a disturbing video of the aftermath of the crash has surfaced.

The 24-year-old Cattolica native Simoncelli lost control of his bike on the second lap of the Malaysian Grand Prix on October 23 and ran across the paths of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi. He fell off his Honda and was run over by Edwards’s bike, losing his helmet and suffering massive trauma to his head, neck and chest. The Gresini Honda rider lay motionless on the track before being taken to the medical centre for treatment. He was declared dead 45 minutes later.

It was the first fatality in MotoGP since Japanese rider Daijiro Katoh died from injuries sustained at the 2003 Japanese GP. Last year, Japan’s Shoya Tomizawa died in a similar crash in a Moto2 race in San Marino.
