What do Fatso, Nora, Maru, Orangey, and Sockington have in common, aside from being cats? All have garnered followings that many human performers would envy.
The original keyboard cat video was made many years ago by performance artist Charlie Schmidt. Schmidt dressed his cat in an infant’s shirt and then manipulated the cat’s arms using the shirt to make it appear as though Fatso was playing independently. While the majority of cats would not have tolerated this, Fatso not only cooperated, but appeared to enjoy himself throughout his puppet performance.
Years later, Brad O-Farrell, syndication manager for MyDamnChannel.com, obtained permission from Schmidt to create a video using the keyboard cat clip. The original video, which depicted a person falling down an escalator, played off by keyboard cat, became an Internet sensation. Soon thousands of YouTubers were attaching the keyboard cat video to the end of video clips highlighting absurd, ironic, or goofy mishaps and gaffes, usually accompanied by some variation of the statement: “Play him off, keyboard cat.”
