As a college administrator, I’ve advised many students who were unsure of which career path to take. They get overwhelmed at all the choices. More often than not, students end up choosing a career that someone has told them they should pursue. This usually leads to dissatisfaction and poor motivation to continue on with their studies. Why? Because, they realize they choose a career based on money or on what someone else thinks they’re capable of. This puts aside the real core of choosing a career, which should be based on what the student enjoys and possibly what talents they already possess. Here’s what you, the student, should consider when choosing a career….

What skills do you currently possess?

This is important because you’ll find that your career is easier and much more enjoyable as you’re able to utilize and expand on skills that you already do pretty well. Examples of skills could be computer skills, researching, writing, speaking, music, organization, or socializing. There are careers that involve each of these individual talents.

Which subject do you enjoy?

The subjects that you enjoy in high school could be a key indicator of what you may enjoy doing as a career. For example, if you enjoy science, you could visit the library or do some research on an internet search engine to discover the very many fields that could allow you to utilize your special skills in addition to your love for science.
