What would happen if a multicultural station were to create a line-up that could attract widespread audiences, not just specific ghettoized communities? What if they shifted their focus to the international language of music and, while they were at it, they decided to throw in a few English subtitles? Well Montreal's CJNT-TV has done just that.
Of course, programming aimed at English viewers is not new at CJNT. Under the control of CanWest/Global, the channel was part of E! Canada and carried a very small handful of E! shows such as E! News and The Soup. But overall, the 40% English and French content consisted mainly American network simulcasts that were already available elsewhere on the dial and just didn't fit in with the ethnic programming.
Ever since Channel Zero purchased Montreal's CJNT, the little station that could has quickly become one of the most improved stations of the country. While Channel Zero, like CanWest, may still be trying to attract mainstream viewers, at least now it's being done in a way that is more consistent.
