DVD camcorders should be the perfect family recorder. The movies are recorded on mini dvds, and they play in the family dvd player. They are easy to store, easy to mail, and easy to label to find in the future. The great difficulty with a DVD camcorder is editing the movies. If the disk has not been finalized, it will not play in a DVD player, but if it has been finalized, edits become more difficult. The right combination of DVD editing software can save time and frustration.

Choose Mini DVDs Formats with Editing in Mind

In the rush to pack for a family vacation, all mini DVDs look alike, but there are some important distinctions. A mini DVD can not be recorded over once it is finalized, but a mini DVD RW doesn't get finalized. It can be recorded on, erased, and used again to record something new. Regular mini dvds offer more protection during editing than mini dvd-rws, because sometimes a rewriteable dvd gets unexpectedly rewritten when it is moved from a camcorder to a computer during editing.

Mini DVD-RAM is another available format for DVD camcorders. They tend to be very reliable discs; they can be re-recorded over, like a DVD RW, but they do not play in regular dvd players and are less likely to confuse the optical reader into thinking they are blank DVDs waiting to record, which is what happens with mini DVD RW at times. Because most DVD players do not play DVD-RAM discs, the easy convenience of being able to record and watch immediately is lost.
